
Colin Cahoon
The combination of Colin Cahoon's legal expertise with a distinguished career in the armed forces enables him to provide clients with smart, technical legal counsel. As a partner in the firm, Mr. Cahoon concentrates his practice in patent law and aviation law. Mr. Cahoon brings a depth and breadth of experience to his practice that enables him to advise clients on a broad spectrum of intellectual property issues.
Mr. Cahoon focuses his patent law practice in the food technologies, petroleum, telecommunications, manufacturing, food processing, aviation and chemical technologies industries. He counsels clients in licensing, technology-related transactional work, corporate mergers, and intellectual property evaluations and negotiations and has extensive experience in providing intellectual property legal support to in-house corporate counsel in a variety of manufacturing fields. Mr. Cahoon has been involved in hundreds of litigation cases, in many cases serving as lead counsel through jury verdict. Most notably, Mr. Cahoon has prosecuted patents through national and international filings for foreign and domestic clients, and manages the international patent portfolios for both large and small clients.
Mr. Cahoon gained "real world" expertise during a successful career as a pilot in the United States Army, where he attained the rank of captain, and while operating a consulting business "Cahoon Water Quality Consultants" in Salinas, California. Upon resigning his Regular Army Commission, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. Mr. Cahoon holds a commercial instrument rating in helicopters, with more than 1,000 hours in UH-1 and OH-58 aircraft, and an instrument rating in fixed-wing aircraft.
Mr. Cahoon is an AV rated attorney and licensed to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. In addition, Mr. Cahoon is licensed to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the U.S. Federal and Fifth Circuit Courts of Appeal, the Federal District Courts for the Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western Districts of Texas, the Federal District Court for the District of New Mexico, the Supreme Court of Texas, and the Supreme Court of New Mexico.
Active in the legal community, Mr. Cahoon is a member of the American Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the State Bar of Texas, the State Bar of New Mexico, the Lawyer-Pilot Bar Association and the Dallas Bar Association. He is also active in his church, having served as Chancellor for the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Dallas, Texas and presently serving as a trustee on its associated school board.
Mr. Cahoon earned his law degree from Southern Methodist University in 1991. Among his academic honors, Mr. Cahoon graduated cum laude - second in his law school class - and was awarded the Order of the Coif and Order of the Barrister. He also served as symposium editor for the Journal of Air Law and Commerce. Mr.Cahoon earned a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from New Mexico State University in 1983 while attending on an Army ROTC scholarship.
