Steven H. Washam

Steven H. Washam is an associate with CARSTENS & CAHOON, LLP. As a fully licensed patent attorney, he practices in all areas of intellectual property law.

Mr. Washam earned his law degree from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law and is an active member of the State Bar of Texas. He is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and possesses substantial experience in patent, trademark, and copyright prosecution, litigation, licensing, and portfolio management in addition to patentability, validity, and non-infringement opinions. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Eastern, Southern, and Western Districts of Texas.

From 1987-1992 Mr. Washam served honorably in the United States Navy, achieving the position of Reactor Operator aboard the fast-attack submarine U.S.S. William H. Bates (SSN-680). Having graduated first in both his Nuclear Field "A" and Nuclear Prototype Training schools, he obtained extensive instruction in electronics, thermodynamics, and nuclear physics. In the fleet, he was charged with operating and maintaining the submarine's nuclear power plant and associated equipment.

After the Navy, Mr. Washam obtained his bachelor's degree in computer engineering from Iowa State University, graduating with distinction. As an undergraduate, he specialized in DSP and embedded microcontroller hardware and software systems design.

Armed with his degree in engineering, Mr. Washam served for several years as a computer engineer for Raytheon Company developing real-time imaging software for massively parallel DSP architectures. From there he progressed as a systems engineer for Philips Speech Processing, leading the development of its UNIX host-based speech recognition systems for the telecommunications industry.
